It was 5 a.m. when the urge to visit my restroom came on January 23, 2012. After completing my visit, I stood to return to my bed. My left leg and my left arm refused to respond, and as I turned to return to the bedroom, I went down, twisting my knee and hitting my head on the linen cabinet. My wife called 911 to get help and after examination at the hospital it was concluded I had suffered a stroke.
I knew nothing about a stroke. But after four days in the hospital, and a lot of visits to several rehabilitation hospitals by my wife and my daughter, they chose HealthSouth Plano Rehabilitation Hospital for me. I could kiss the ground they walk on for this. HealthSouth has been a wonderful rehab.
They provided a book titled Living with Stroke written by Dr. Richard C. Senelick that provided most all of my answers to the questions I had about what to expect in most situations to come.
I didn't know I was going to have to learn how to do a lot of simple things again, such as getting dressed, shave without cutting my throat and brush my teeth and even how to eat on my own. The menu is outstanding, prepared very well, and your choice. HealthSouth provided supervised dining, with professionals to help me learn how to eat and chew without choking, a real danger for me right after the stroke.
I had a number of other health issues when I checked into HealthSouth. The doctors and nurses were careful to diagnose and treat my sprained knee, and made sure to provide, administer and monitor all the medications I needed for my numerous other medical problems, from respiratory and heart conditions to skin conditions and neuropathy.
I needed help dressing, getting to the bathroom, and doing many basic tasks, even help to sit up straight. After four weeks of hard work in rehab, I was able to come home. HealthSouth personnel arranged to get me all the necessary equipment and prescriptions, and gave me all the training I needed to get in and out of the car in order to get home, and function at home.
The nurses and aids taught me so many things and provided encouragements to see me through the day that has left me eternally grateful. All the staff is very professional, courteous and encouraging.
I was completely paralyzed on the left side. With their help, I now have some use of my left hand, arm, leg and foot. My goal is to be able to walk again, and to use my left hand and arm. I've made a good start. They make me stand on my left foot and exercise my left leg every time I have physical therapy. We're working on my left arm and hand in occupational therapy, and among other things I can now hold my cell phone in my left hand, which frees up my right hand for other things.
Thank you, HealthSouth.
